Iwobi pays tribute to Amodu: He told us to wear Nigeria’s colours with pride

Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi has paid tribute to late coach Shaibu Amodu, the former technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation, who died at the weekend aged 58.

The 20-year-old recalled a meeting with Amodu before the Super Eagles’ 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Egypt in Kaduna last March.
He said Amodu, who led nigeria to qualify for the 2002 and 2010 World Cups and also finished third with Nigeria at two Afcon tournaments, enjoined the players to wear the national colours with pride, dedication and commitment.
“What struck me most was Coach Amodu’s in-depth knowledge of the game, his attention to detail and his calm manner and approach,” Iwobi said in a tribute made available to Goal.
“He was assertive and very encouraging to the team and made it clear that the hopes and aspirations of the nation rested on our shoulders.
“I was shocked to hear about the sudden passing away of Coach Shaibu Amodu.
“Coach Amodu without question is a colossus and football icon and has over the years made meaningful contribution to Nigerian football both at club and international levels.
“I also learnt that Coach Amodu worked at various times with BCC Lions, El-Kanemi Warriors, Shooting Stars and Orlando Pirates and with the Nigeria Senior National Team.
“He took great pride in his job, his achievements speak for themselves and fitting tributes have been made by the nation in recognition of his achievements.
“Coach Amodu has coached the cream of Nigerian football players and I had the privilege of working with him albeit for a very short time during the preparations for the two-legged Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt.
“He will forever be remembered as a distinguished personality, a man of integrity and principles. He will be dearly missed by all,” Iwobi said.

Seyi Akinwunmi pointed out that his speech reflected the perceptions of women's football in the country, dismissing claims that he had accused lesbians of killing the game

The vice-president of the Nigerian Football Federation has clarified his comments on female football players, after being accused of blaming lesbians for the national team's decline.
The Super Falcons have won nine of the 11 African Women's Championships that have taken place since 1991, making them the toughest female side on the continent.
But the team failed to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games, and hit the spotlight for the wrong reasons when Seyi Akinwunmi was quoted as saying "Lesbianism kills teams" in Nigeria.
The vice-president, however, subsequently hit out at the skewed versions of his speech, and said he was referring to the difficulty of attracting sponsors for the women's game.
"I noted that one of the problems we have encountered in trying to raise funds for the women's game, is the perception of lesbianism therein," he said.
"We strongly believe that there are still potential sponsors out there who will lend their support to help us develop our female teams because of the glory that these girls have brought to this country and their enormous potential to do even more."

Fayose Mocks Buhari Over Ogoni Visit "You Have Surrendered To Militants'

Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, has alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari aborted his trip to the oil-rich Ogoni land in Rivers state, as a result of the assassination threat from the Niger Delta Avengers.

A militant had told one of the hosts of UK-based Radio Biafra that Buhari “should sign his death warrant” before his visit to Ogoni, and the president ended up delegating Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to the landmark flag-off of the clean-up of Ogoni.

Reacting, Fayose advised Nigerians to seek help elsewhere, because Buhari had “surrendered to the superior powers of the militants”.

“It is shameful and embarrassing that a retired military general could succumb to threat from militants despite what he told Nigerians that he was going to lead from the fronts,” read a statement issued on his behalf by Lere Olayinka, his special assistant on public communications and new media.

“By not going to Ogoni today, because of threat from the NDA, our president has shown that he is actually afraid of the militants and the best thing to do in a situation like this is to dialogue with the militants so as to save Nigeria economy from imminent collapse.

“It also shows that the president’s ability to secure Nigeria and its people is doubtful, because if the president could succumb to threat from militants and abandon his official function for his deputy, ordinary Nigerians should seek help elsewhere.

“The president should therefore save Nigeria the agony of military misadventure in the Niger Delta by holding dialogue with the militants with a view to resolving their grievances. He should emulate late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua by having a roundtable talks with the Niger Delta militants.”
