Afe Babalola Rejects 120 Cut-off Mark For Nigerian Universities

Founder of the Afe Babalola University Ado Ekiti, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN),

on Wednesday kicked against the 120 cut-off mark for admission into universities, polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education for the 2017/2018 academic session.

He described the reduction as violence to the university system and a major setback to quality education in the country.
Recall that that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board had on announced on Tuesday the reduction of cut-off marks for candidates seeking admission into Nigerian universities to 120 and 100 for polytechnics and colleges of education in the country.
But Babalola, in a statement, said he was worried that the decision was taken without due consideration for its implication on the quality of education in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
“What is the whole essence of reducing cut-off marks for admission to as low as120 for universities and 100 for polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education? Will such an action enhance or reduce the quality of education?
“Will it give international recognition to the degrees awarded by the Nigerian universities which, in any case, are already being questioned? Is the reduction a deliberate ploy to make things worse?” Babalola quizzed.
He, therefore, called for an urgent education summit which he suggested should be attended by stakeholders of higher education institutions to addressthe problems. The statement read, “Are we now saying there will be no uniform standards in ourtertiary education in this country? Is the government or its agencies encouraging double or multiple standards?
“I do hope that those behind this reduction are aware that even candidates who pass the UTME at 180 and above now find it difficult and tasking to get admission into Nigerian universities because there are more qualified candidates than the spaces available and because of the paucity of facilities in the existing universities.
“It must be appreciated that even the former 180 cut-off mark is less than 50 per cent of the total JAMB marks. As I said earlier, a minimum of 50 per cent was regarded and acknowledged as pass mark in elementary schools in those days and now JAMB is recommending 120, a mere 30 per cent of the total score of 400.”
But the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has insisted that pegging the minimum cut-off benchmark for admission at 120 for universities and 100 for polytechnics, will improve access to education.

OCTOBER ONE 2017 MARKS THE END OF YOUR ABILITY TO SPEAK!

These current occupants of Aso Rock seem struggling with a lot at the same time. One of her recent heartaches is the freedom with which Nigerians take advantage of Chapter four, Section 39 of the nation's constitution which posits that,

"Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference".

The failure of this government, through her legislators to enact against social media freedom early in the year is an unforgettable blow too much to forget. In truth, it resorted to section 24 of the Cyber Crime Act of 2015 which reads,

"Any person who, knowingly or intentionally sends a message or other matter by means of computer systems or network... (that is/or of) “grossly offensive”... “Menacing character”... commits an offence under this Act and shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not more than N7,000, 000.00 or imprisonment for a term of not more than 3 years or to both such fine and imprisonment”

In the foregoing references, it is obvious that this government's in-ability to live with criticisms has come to a head. The Jonathan administration may undoubtedly hold a PhD in "Kleptocratic Genomic Contrivance", but the President Buhari led leadership wields the heinous toga of the Communist Party in China and may be tending towards Fascism.

On August ten, 2017, the Zonal Coordinator of the National Broadcasting Commission Mr. Matthew Okoduwa read a riot act, that amongst other breaches of human rights, phone-in programmes on both radio and television stations will cease to be from the first of October, 2017.

He further said #50,000 will be paid by the media house where hate speech emanates and that the cost of such calls will be borne by the media house and not the callers.

It became even ridiculous when he said newspaper reviews can only be aired once in a day, making NBC the owners of the vision and mission of privately owned media houses. Of course i don't expect that you ask me, because federal and state owned media automatically comply.

TELL ME WHERE YOUR VOICE WILL BE ON THE DAY WHEN NIGERIA CELEBRATES HER FIFTY SEVENTH INDEPENDENCE...WHEN TAX PAYERS' MONEY MUST BE 'BLOWN'

We need to remind ourselves, that barely two weeks before President Buhari returned, his Acting "delegate" mooted the discountenance of hate speeches and suggested that Okoduwa's position will be the path on which new feet must tread. Hate speeches are terrible and must never be allowed, but these measure will definitely set us mockingly back.

President Mohammadu Buhari's return speech after 104 days in London also toed the same line. He said and i quote,

"Nigerians are robust and lively in discussing their affairs, but I was distressed to notice that some of the comments, especially in the social media have crossed our national red lines by daring to question our collective existence as a nation. This is a step too far".

Help me to understand please. What are national red lines? What are steps too far?

These are not good signs and until we realize that the canisters upon which our butts are forced upon are releasing combustible smoke, then we are are just content with eating, drinking and making babies whose future seem non-existent; thus repeating a cycle that leaves no indelible mark on the imprints of the enviable fabrics of our world.

JAMB fixes cut off marks for universities, polytechnics, colleges of education

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has fixed minimum cut off marks for Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
The minimum cut off marks for admissions into universities in Nigeria was set for 120, polytechnics and colleges of education pegged at 100, while that of innovative enterprising institutes was pegged at 110.
Institutions are, however, at liberty to raise their cut off marks for admission above the minimum set by JAMB.
Also, admissions into public degree awarding institutions for the 2017 UTME examination will end on January 15, 2018 while for private institutions, it ends on January 31, 2018.
Also, decisions on first choice candidates by universities will end on October 15, and second choice candidates will end on December 15; after which the remaining students will be available in the market place for other institutions till the January closing dates.
These decisions were taken at the 2017 Combined Policy Meetings on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria which ended on Tuesday.
The Registrar of JAMB, Ishaq Oloyede, said a Central Admission Processing System, CAPS, will be used to streamline admission processes among institutions, as it addresses challenges associated with the former approach.
Mr. Oloyede also said that Institutions could conduct dual mode system which involves both manual and the newly introduced CAPS.

He advocated a dynamic educational policy as related to admissions.
“All over the world, there is agitation for dynamic educational policy,” he said. “JAMB only admits for National Diploma, not Higher National Diploma; so why should we use the same requirement for ND and BSC, that is unreasonable parity.”
“We should not be sentimental in fixing our cut off mark; we need not over-dramatise issue of cut off mark.”
He said candidates’ applications to study agriculture was very low while applications to study medicine and health sciences increased.
Speaking on illegal admissions, he said the process is now automated because the Registrar of JAMB must approve all candidates.
“About 17,160 students were admitted without JAMB across institutions in Nigeria,” he said.
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, also formerly announced a lift of the ban on the conduct of Post-UTME examination as a prerequisite for admission into tertiary institutions.
“Cancellation of Post- UTME is a mistake,” he said.
He noted that banning of post-UTME led to a lot of irregularities by candidates and some institutions.
The minister explained that with the lifting of the ban on the conduct of the examination, institutions are now at liberty to conduct, while adding that fee for the examination should not exceed N2000.
He explained that the 2016 admission process was a huge success, while expressing optimism that government is working assiduously to make that of 2017 better.

Mr. Adamu noted that government is also making efforts to expand access and ensure equality in the education sector.
He expressed optimism that a substantial number of candidates who sat for the 2017 UTME would gain admission into tertiary institution.
“Over 1.6 million candidates applied for degree courses, over 17,000 for ND as well as NCE,” he said.

Jacob Zuma Narrowly Survives Impeachment

South African President, Jacob Zuma has just survived a vote of no confidence procedure that could have led to his impeachment.

Despite the ballot being held in secret, opposition parties had hoped the secret vote would mean Members of Parliament from the governing African National Congress (ANC) might side with them against the president.

But Zuma narrowly survived by 198 votes in his favour to 177 votes against him while 9 MPS abstained.

In order for the no-confidence motion to pass, at least 50 out of the ANC's 249 MPs would have had to vote against the president. However, the result means at least 26 ANC MPs rebelled, while another nine MPs abstained from voting.

Zimbabwean Prostitutes Offer Free Sex To Mourners At Thief’s Funeral

In what will come across as a really shocking development, it has been revealed that there was free sex galorein Mbare, Zimbabwe on Monday and Tuesday night as prostitutes mourneda serial thief by offering free sex to all mourners. They described the late thief who succumbed to tuberculosis as a sex maniac.

According to H-Metro, the infamous thief identified as Masiyas Mesiyas is also said to be the one who stole Jamaican artiste Elephant Man’s cellphone when he came into the country a few years ago.Mbare residents say Mesiyas was in the same league with the late thief Borris who died near Zindoga Shopping centre in a speed chase with police. The funeral was themed ‘Birwai, Sv***ai' as thieving, drug abuse and sex topped the funeral wake. Sex workers said Mesiyas was their regular client.

“Mesiyas was a well-known thief but one of the things we have known him for as sex workers in Mbare is that he loved sex and was our regular client. We had no money to contribute in planning the funeral arrangements, but we offered what we know best andmale mourners who came for the funeral could get sex for free,” said one of the hookers who identified herself as Busi

spokesperson Brandon Chikukwa confirmed that mourners at the funeral were being treated to free sex by hookers.
“I have never seen anything like what I witnessed from Monday night when my uncle died.

People were celebrating his life in different ways, as they were having sex in cars and at night, people would just go anywhere private and start having sex. The service was being offered by the prostitutes for free to everyone who attended, we just hope they were wearing condoms.

As a family we do not condone what was happening but there was nothing we could do because he was a people’s person. They were doing what they thought was best to pay their last respects to him,” said Chikukwa.
