We bathed once a week, ate once a day, slept in the rain - Freed Lagos Pupils

One of the freed pupils of the Lagos State Model College, Igbonla, Epe, Ramon Isiaq, has said his stay in the kidnappers’ hideout is an experience he would never forget in a hurry.

The 16-year-old Senior Secondary School 2 pupil said the abductors exposed him and his colleagues – Peter Jonah, Adebayo George, Judah Agbausi, Pelumi Philips and Farouq Yusuf – to rains in the camp they were kept.

He said they were fed with poorly cooked food and that they were only allowed to bathe once in a week.

The children were dropped at a creek in Ondo State around 12 pm on Friday after spending 64 days in captivity.

They were reunited with their parents in Lagos later.

Their release came on the heels of fresh N5m ransom collected by the kidnappers on Tuesday at Odi-Omi community in Ogun State.

Isiaq in a brief chat with one of our correspondents on the telephone on Saturday said there were times they went hungry all day.

He said, “After they kidnapped us that day (May 25), we were kept around our school, while a (police) helicopter was patrolling the area. They asked us to hide in a bush so that people in the helicopter would not see us. In the midnight, they sent a boat to pick us.

“The following day, they gave us spaghetti. We ate the same thing in the afternoon and evening. They told us that some security men were sent to fight them, but they killed the men. They threatened that we would die there.

“We were seven in an uncompleted building. The seventh person is a man that was looking after us. It was a bad experience. We didn’t enjoy our sleep. We always prayed that rain would not fall. If rain fell, it would beat us. Sometimes, they didn’t give us food; at times they gave us food once in a day. At other times, they wouldn’t give us food at all. We ate together. We bathed once or twice in a week.”

At a point, Isiaq stated that he and the other pupils complained about their maltreatment to the leader of the kidnap gang.

“After some time, I met with their boss called ‘Chief’ or ‘Chairman’ that we did not enjoy the food they cooked for us and that we should be allowed to prepare our food by ourselves. They didn’t allow us to move around…” the Lagos pupil stated as his father stopped the conversation.

The father promised SUNDAY PUNCH that Isiaq would speak more with one of correspondents about his experience later in the day.

However, subsequent calls made to the father’s telephone line were not picked.

Also, parents of the other pupils rescued from the kidnappers did not allow SUNDAY PUNCH to speak with the freed kids.

They also declined to share any experience the kids narrated to them with one of our correspondents.

After some persuasion, one of the parents who preferred to speak on condition of anonymity told SUNDAY PUNCH that her son took ill while held hostage by the kidnappers.

“We have been told not to ask them any question, except they decide to talk about their experience. So, I wouldn’t want to expose him to any danger. But so far, he told me they were moved from one camp to another and that they were cooking by themselves at a point. He also fell sick while in captivity. While the school was in second term, he was ill and was recuperating when the abduction happened. I think the kind of environment he was exposed to by those guys made him to fall sick again. He is relaxed now.

“He said one of the camps was built with straw and that the kidnappers mounted a tarpaulin to cover them when the rain was much. They allowed them to move around and did not maltreat them. One of them, (Isiaq) who can swim had started teaching them how to do so. My son told me they were wearing black clothes before they gave them the jerseys they wore yesterday (Friday). The jerseys had been collected for laboratory examination,” she said.

Meanwhile, a security source has denied that extra N5m was paid before the pupils were freed.

A top security officer who spoke on condition of anonymity told SUNDAY PUNCH that it was the extra efforts put in place by the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi, which led to their release.

The source disclosed that Ajayi and one of his aides, both of whom hail from Ese Odo Local Government Area, with another ex-militant went to the creek on the order of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to negotiate the release of the children with the kidnappers.

“No ransom was paid as far we are concerned. The deputy governor went into the creek with one of his aides known as Donald Ojogo, without any security detail because the militants (abductors) warned them against coming with security operatives; that if they came with security men, they would kill the pupils. He knows the terrain (of the creek).

“They also warned the government to move away gunboats of the Navy and the police from the waterways in Lagos, Ogun and Ondo states. They spoke with the deputy governor in pidgin English. They told him they were indigenes of Ondo State and that they wanted to be included in the amnesty programme of the Federal Government. They said they would release the pupils and the Federal Government too should include them in amnesty programme,” the source stated.

CAN president denies funds diversion allegation

NATIONAL President of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Rev. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, has described allegations of financial impropriety against his leadership as a blatant lie concocted by agents of Satan, who are opposed to ongoing overhaul of CAN.

National President, Patriotic Christian Youth of Nigeria, PSYN, an affiliate body of CAN, Evangelist Simon Timothy Nasso, had in Lafia, Nasarawa State, accused the CAN president of diverting over N40 million meant to take care of the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, to buy official cars.

However, reacting to Vanguard’s inquiry on the allegation, Rev. Ayokunle, in a WhatSApp message sent through his aide, said the allegation was a blatant lie.

He said: “You should know that somebody of my spiritual status cannot misappropriate money because I came to CAN from a denomination with bigger administrative set up and with more funds to manage for different mission works.

CAN President, Dr Samson Ayokunle“Let them know that I am not a novice in administration and my integrity is the hallmark of my ministry.”
Rev. Ayokunle urged his aides to let the correspondent know that it was the “few remnants of political jobbers who feel that they are loosing out in CAN and are opposed to a total overhaul of things in CAN that are behind such allegation.

‘’They belong to the camp of evil men like Korah and Abiram that opposed Moses and accused him wrongly.“

Tell him (our correspondent)to ask them to give him documentary evidence for their claim. Besides, he should tell them to wait for the external auditor’s report before their campaign of calumny. Tell him that the people are agents of Satan who do not worry about rubbishing the image of Christ, which CAN and its leadership stand for.”

“One of them eyes the position I divinely occupy thinking that it is by destroying my name that they can be popular. They did that with my predecessor and they have started with me again. By the grace of God, unless they repent, God will recompense tribulation to all those people who are part of the mixed multitude in the body of Christ doing this type of dirty job.

“This is what the Book of II Thessalonians 1:6 says. They are enemies of the church. Why can’t they present their allegation to CAN leadership if they are sure of it? Why should they go to the press?”

Rooney Thrilled to Return to Everton

Wayne Rooney on Sunday afternoon announced that he was excited to be back at Everton, the club with which the 31-year old began his Premiership career as a teenager.

Sports Village Square gathered the England’s captain’s from his tweets on Sunday. That was shortly after he completed a sensational Everton return after signing a two-year deal.

He is joining the likes of Super Eagles Henry Onyekuru, Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez and Michael Keane. He thus becomes Everton’s fifth senior signing this summer. However, Sports Village Square gathered, Nigeria’s Onyekuru may not play alongside the legendary Rooney as the Super Eagles’ recent call-up is heading out on loan to Anderlecht.

Everton did not waste time in unveiling Rooney their boyhood hero who returned after 13 years of absence.

Rooney will reportedly earn around £150,000-a-week – the club’s biggest wage earner in their history – and, speaking to the club’s official site following his remarkable reunion with his boyhood side, failed to contain his delight at securing a move back home. The completion of Rooney’s reunion with the Toffees marks the end of a 10-month long transfer saga that initially saw the 31-year-old tipped to move back down the M62 in October.

Koeman said “Wayne has shown me that ambition that we need and that winning mentality – he knows how to win titles and I’m really happy he’s decided to come home…

“He loves Everton and he was desperate to come back. He is still only 31 and I don’t have any doubts about his qualities. It’s fantastic he’s here.”

Rooney made 77 appearances in all competitions for Everton during his first spell with the club – a spell that saw him score 17 goals – before he broke Evertonian hearts to join United in a £27m move in August 2004.

The United legend featured 559 times for the Europa League winners across 13 seasons at Old Trafford, becoming the club’s new all-time record goal scorer and lifting 18 titles with the English heavyweights.

Following their 1-0 win over Chile in the FIFA Confederations Cup final in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the newly crowned champions have narrowly overtaken Brazil (2nd, down by 1 point) and leapfrogged Argentina (3rd, down by 1 point). European neighbours, Poland (6th, up 4) also have cause to celebrate, having risen to their best-ever ranking. Spain, however, dropped from the first ten to now place 11th.

“It’s Like Senator Adeleke’s Death Has Made Davido's Father Run Mad” - Aregbesola

The Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has said Dr. Deji Adeleke may have gone mad because of the death of his brother, Senator Isiaka Adeleke.

Aregbesola said this in Ede on Wednesday at the campaign of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the Osun West Senatorial District by-election holding on Saturday.

The governor’s vituperation was in reaction to allegation that he owed Deji Adeleke money.

But Aregbesola said he did not borrowany money from Deji at anytime, saying it was the Adelekes that had been collecting money from him.

He said, “Deji Adeleke is a business man, he is not a politician but it is like his brother’s death has run him mad.” (O dabi pe iku egbon e ti da lori ru). It is a lie that I borrowed money from Deji,

“It is to the glory of God that they got the Certificate of Occupancy of their university from our government. Why didn’t those who are their new friends give them C of O of that university? If Deji Adeleke had so much money, whydid he beg me to waive the payable tax of his university? Why couldn’t he just pay?

“I am bold enough to say this over andover again, because I have never sought assistance from any member of the Adeleke family, even during the lifetime of Senator Isiaka Adeleke. Nothing of such occurred.

“My relationship with the late Adeleke was cordial and beyond politics because we had known each other even before Osun politics, because our residences were adjacent to each other in Lagos State.”

He said political office was not by inheritance, saying if it was so, Bola Ige family would have been ruling the state.

In a related development, the National Chairman of the PDP, Ali Modu Sherif, on Wednesday stormed Apomu, the headquarters of Isokan Local Government Area to lead the campaign for Chief Ademola Adeleke, who is the standard bearer of the party in the Osun West Senatorial District by-election.

A former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Iyiola Omisore, who recently joined hands with the Sheriff faction of the PDP in Osun State, was also one of the prominent leaders of the PDP, who campaigned for Adeleke.

The campaign train of the PDP, after leaving Apomu, headed for Iwo in continuation of the electioneering.

Meanwhile, one of the election observer groups, accredited to monitor the election, Centre for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness, has said there may be voter apathy due to the threat being tissues by some politicians ahead of the poll.

The Director-General of the CLCA, Dr. Gabriel Nwanbu, said this at a press conference in Osogbo on Wednesday.

Court hears Evans’ case against police July 13

The Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed July 13 for hearing in a N300m fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by suspected kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike a.k.a. Evans, against the Inspector-General of Police.

Evans, through his lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, filed the suit last week urging the court to order the police to charge him to court or release him immediately.

He urged the court to award N300m damages against the police in his favour for his alleged unlawful detention without being charged to court.

A source at the court said on Wednesday that the case wasinitially assigned to Justice Babs Kuewumi, but was later returned to the court’s registry to enable it to be assigned to another judge who would hear it during the court’s long vacation. The source said, “The case was assigned to Justice Kuewumi. But due to its nature, the judge felt it would be better handled by a vacation judge.

“He felt it would not be ideal to adjourn it for hearing until after the long vacation in September.

“So, it was the judge who gave the parties the July 13 date to appear before the vacation judge after studying the file.”In the suit, Evans is seeking a court’s order directing the respondents to immediately charge him to court if there is any case against him in accordance with sections 35 (1) (c) (3) (4) (5) (a) (b) and 36 of the constitution.

He is, in the alternative, seeking an order compelling the respondents to immediately release him unconditionally in the absence of any offence that will warrant his being charged to court.

Evans is contending that his continued detention by the respondents since June 10, 2017, without being charged to court or released on bail is an infringement on his fundamental human rights.

South African Oap Sacked For Calling President Zuma A “Zombie”

A popular South African radiopresented has been fired by the Broadcasting Corporation(SABC), for calling President Jacob Zuma a “zombie” in a Facebook post, the privately owned News 24 site has reported.

According to SABC spokesman, Kaizer Kganyago, he said OAP Ravi Govender’s contract was terminated because of concerns that he had brought the public broadcaster into disrepute.

It was reported that the Radio Lotus presenter had earlier apologized for the post that he said he had put up inanger after listening to a speech by the President at the governing African National Congress’ (ANC) policy conference in the main city, Johannesburg, on Friday

He said;

“Just heard a Zombie Zuma giving a speech on the news. Massacring the beautiful English language. Uneducated creature. Even the other moron [Zimbabwe’s President Robert] Mugabe speaks much better,”Mr. Zuma’s son, Edward, accused Mr. Govender of hate speech and threatened legal action against him.

Edward was quoted saying

“We fail as a family to understand what prompted Ravi Govender to make such a statement referring to our father as a zombie. Is this still part of freedom of speech? We believe that this is the worst form of abuse of democracy that many of our leaders fought so hard to achieve,” .

Police to IPOB: You can’t stop Anambra elections

The police yesterday allayed fear over the recent threat by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to disrupt the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State.

The Police Commissioner Garba Umar said no one, including the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) can stop the polls.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the police are capable of ensuring a peaceful election in the state.

“The election has been fixed by the relevant federal government agency. Nobody can stop it,” Umar said.“We have the capacity to provide a peaceful atmosphere in Anambra State for that election.

“Nobody or group can issue such threat and succeed, because we have all it will take to subdue such threat.

“No group can do that. The people of the state have the right to have periodic elections to choose their leaders; nobody or group can stop them from exercising such right. We can’t allow it. It’s not done. We are fully on the ground and we can suppress such threats.”

Umar said the police in the state were consulting with relevant stakeholders in the state to ensure that there would peace during the poll.

The leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, had warned that elections would be boycotted in the South-east states starting with the November 18election in Anambra, if the federal government fails to hold referendum for the realisation of the State of Biafra.

“If the federal government does not agree with us on a date for referendum, there willbe no elections in the South-east, we are starting with Anambra come November this year. There will be no governorship election in Anambra State,” he said.
