Arsenal Agrees £6.8m For Henry Onyekuru

Arsenal have agreed a £6.8m fee with KAS Eupen for Henry Onyekuru, according to Sky sources.

The Gunners have been in talks with the Belgian club since last week and are now close to landing the 19-year-old Nigerian striker.

Although personal terms have not been sorted out, Onyekuru is an avid Arsenal fan and is reportedly keen on moving to the Emirates.

Onyekuru finished this season as the top scorer in the Jupiler League scoring 22 goals. He also attracted interest from Everton, Southampton, West Ham and West Brom. But it is the Gunners who have activated his £6.8million release clause.

He has already turned down moves to Belgian giants, Brugge and Anderlecht.

The player is currently on international duty with Nigeria, who take on Togo in an international friendly game on Thursday.

Two Prostitutes Kill Customer In Ogun Over Money

The police in Ogun have arrested two commercial sex workers for allegedly killing a customer, Adeyinka Olayinka.

The incident occurred at KS Hotel, Ifo on Tuesday.

According to the police, Kudirat Raji alias Angela and Esther Basiru were said to have stabbed Olayinka with a broken bottle during an argument.

Spokesman for the command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent (ASP) said the victim contracted Raji for the night but the duo had an argument over the price.

Oyeyemi said: “The victim was supervising an ongoing construction work on his property and so he spent the night at the hotel. He contracted Kudirat Raji to pass the night with him on an agreed amount but reneged on their agreement.

“His refusal to pay the agreed amount led to a hot argument between them. While the argument was going on, Esther Basiru, a friend to Angela broke a bottle and injured the deceased’s friend who was at the scene.

“Angela used the broken part of the bottle to stab the deceased on the armpit thereby cutting one of his nerves, consequent upon which he bled to death.

“The manager of the hotel alerted the police at Ifo and the DPO, CSP Anthony Haruna led his men to the scene and arrested the two suspects.

“The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu has ordered the transfer of the case to Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for discrete investigation and possible prosecution of the suspects.”

Vampire bats attack, feast on humans in Brazil

Vampire bats have sparked panic in north east Brazil, where they have started feasting on humans, leaving one man dead and more than 40 people being treated for rabies.
Health chiefs confirmed farmer Edivalson Francisco Souza, 46, died in March more than a week after he was bitten on the foot by a rabies-carrying vampire bat.

Vampire bats attack humans in Brazil

Vampire bats attack humans in Brazil
Within days of his death – the first recorded case of human rabies transmitted by a bat in Brazil since 2004 – dozens of people in the region reported being bitten by the winged mammals in their own homes, they said.
The spate of attacks, the most significant ever registered in the region, is being attributed to a rise in the bat population nesting close to humans after their homes in caves and forestry were destroyed.
In response, disease control teams from Bahia state health authority (SESAB) have started culling the creatures by catching them and applying a venom paste to their bodies.
Mr Souza was milking a cow on a farm in Paramirim when he accidentally stepped on a rabies-carrying bat that bit his foot.
He dismissed the incident and washed the wound but failed to see a doctor.
Three weeks later, after spending seven days in hospital, suffering from headaches, nausea, severe anxiety and shortness of breath, he recalled the incident.
He tested positive for rabies, but it was too late for doctors to administer the vaccine and he passed away shortly afterwards in March this year.
Within days of Mr Souza’s death, residents in city of Salvador, 400 miles from Paramirim, reported a flurry of attacks by the blood-thirsty creatures that appear to have added human blood to their menu.
Over the past three months, dozens of people have told of being terrorised by the flying mammals at night.
Many said they had woken up to the distressing sight of their bed sheets soaked in blood after bats had sunk their fangs into their toes, heels and elbows.

Champions League final and full flashbacks

Among the many reasons to believe Saturday’s Champions League final in Cardiff might be a classic is the presence of two of the greatest attacking full-backs in the history of the game.

Not since Roberto Carlos and Cafu have Brazil boasted a better attacking pair than Marcelo and Dani Alves and after years of being either side of the Clasico divide in Spain they now find themselves as rivals once more with the European Cup at stake.
“Marcelo versus Dani Alves is a classic, a battle of giants,” Cafu told dpa.
Marcelo scored three times and gave 11 assists this season as Real Madrid’s left flank was once again their most important attacking outlet.
Ten years on from signing as a 19-year-old he now has legend status at the club having become one of the captains and the foreign player who has won most games for the club in La Liga passing Roberto Carlos’ record of 211.
Marcelo passed his illustrious predecessor’s record playing 80 fewer games and he has won 14 trophies in the process with four leagues; two Champions Leagues; two World Club Cups; two Super Cups of Spain; two European Super Cups and two Copas del Rey among the medals haul.
For trophy collectors no-one beats Alves however.
The 34-year-old right-back gears up for his 100th Champions League game, having already won the competition three times with Barcelona – his latest success came by beating Juve 3-1 in 2015 as the Bianconeri lost the sixth of their eight finals.
After moving to Turin  last June as a free agent after eight seasons with Barca he has gradually became a hero to the club’s supporters.
When goalkeeping captain Gianluigi Buffon welcomed him at the Vinovo camp, he seemed to feel that the Brazilian could be crucial in the continental campaign.
“I asked Dani Alves to help us, above all us older members of the team, to achieve the dream we are still chasing and help us push the bar a little higher,” the 39-year-old Buffon said at the start of the Serie A season in August.
“He is rather accustomed to certain targets and victories, so I think that his experience can really help us.”
While fitting into Juve’s tactics, Alves fractured his left fibula in Serie A action in late November and returned in February, when he came off the bench to seal a 2-0 defeat of Porto as the elite event entered its knock-out stage.
He then played all the five games leading to the final, shining in the 3-0 aggregate defeat of Barca, and hugging his former team-mate Neymar, who was in tears after the scoreless return leg in Spain.
The 4-1 elimination of Monaco in the semi-finals saw Alves drill home a smashing long-range volley and provide three assists, proving to fully deserve his international reputation.
“We have a final to play,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what happened in the past, it only matters what we can achieve with this team now.
We have more confidence [than Juve’s runners-up of 2015] and we will go there [in Cardiff] to win.”
As Juve seek a historic treble after already lifting this season’s domestic title and cup, Alves looks to improve his record tally of 26 titles, as credited by UEFA. And counting only international club trophies won with Sevilla and Barca, he has one more than Juve’s 11.
Both players have the pedigree to suggest that when the ball starts rolling on Saturday it will not necessarily be the forwards who decide the destiny of the final.

Moji Olaiya's Burial: Ekiti State Government Releases Statement

Ekiti State Government has explained why it has yet to respond to requests to help fund the repatriation of the remains of Nollywood Actress, Moji Olaiya from Canada to Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Monday, Special Assistant to Governor Ayodele Fayose on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka said the claim that Ekiti State refused to assist with the flying of Olaiya’s corpse to Nigeria for burial was totally false.

While maintaining that there was no official communication between the governor and Moji Olaiya’s family on the issue of assistance, Olayinka disclosed that: “On Thursday, last week, I was contacted on phone by a journalist friend, Yomi Fabiyi on the need for the Ekiti State Government to assist in raising a sum of $15,000 needed to bring Moji Olaiya’s corpse to Nigeria.

“My immediate response was that an official request, via a letter should be made and that the letter will be presented to the governor. I gave him my email address to which I said the letter should be sent.

“On Friday, I informed the Chief of Staff to the governor, Chief Dipo Anisulowo of my telephone conversation with Yomi Fabiyi, and my response that official letter should be written to the governor.

“Up till today, the letter has not been sent and as such, no official request has been made to the State Government.

“When my attention was drawn to online publications that Governor Fayose had elected to fund the flying of the deceased corpse to Nigeria, I called the journalist who did the report and told him pointedly that no such decision was taken by the governor.

“It was on the strength of this that Mr Yomi Fabiyi issued a press statement on behalf of the Burial Committee, stating that no request had been made to the government of Ekiti State and the official letter requested was yet to be sent.

“It therefore, beats our imagination that certain character like Olukayode Salako could take to the online media to make derogatory comments on the governor, purportedly on behalf of the family.

President Trump to Face Polar Opposite in Meeting With Pope Francis

President Trump and Pope Francis have little in common. One rose to power championing his wealth and machismo, the other on a platform of humility and mercy. One wants to build a wall to keep migrants out, and the other preaches to welcome the stranger. When they meet for the first time on Wednesday morning in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, their competing visions of greatness will come to a head—with diplomatic and political consequences.
Trump’s break with his predecessor, on nearly every issue, has raised questions about how the U.S. and the Vatican will work together diplomatically going forward. President Obama and Pope Francis shared a political vision that pushed forward an historic detente with Cuba, an agreement for global climate conservation, and a commitment to abolishing nuclear weapons. Their unity marked a reversal in recent American politics, where Rome seemed to favor the Democratic economic policy agenda instead of the GOP’s social one.
Already, behind the scenes, top Vatican officials have expressed concern about Trump. When Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee visited the Vatican in February and met with Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, he says “there certainly was not a glow” when it came to the new president. Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia visited the same week. “There was a great alignment between the things we were trying to do in the world and the things that the Vatican was trying to do,” Kaine says of the Obama years. “Now I see more conflict.”
Trump and Pope Francis have long had a tense relationship. Shortly after Pope Francis was elected four years ago, Trump tweeted that Francis was not very “pope-like” and that he didn’t like that Francis paid his own hotel bill. When Pope Francis visited Mexico during the 2016 U.S. presidential primaries and said it was “not Christian” to build walls to keep out migrants, Trump shot back that Francis was “disgraceful.” When Trump was inaugurated, Pope Francis sent a note promising prayers and asking that America be known “above all by its concern for the poor, the outcast and those in need who, like Lazarus, stand before our door.” Last month, when Francis visited Egypt, he expressed concern that “demagogic forms of populism” were rising across the globe.
The Trump Administration’s refugee rhetoric and policy have been a significant point of tension. Kaine and Pope Francis discussed about the global refugee crisis for five minutes in Spanish when they met in February. “He said, I appreciate your support for the kinds of policies that I am talking about, but I hope you might be able to convince some who serve with you to see it the same way,” Kaine recounts. “The Vatican is deeply worried about a mindset that would paint refugees as terrorists, or refugees as a problem.”
This leaves the Trump administration looking for new points of unity as they envision a different relationship with the Vatican. So far, one main shared interest is fighting human trafficking. Ivanka Trump will visit the Catholic Community of Sant'Egidio during the visit to Rome, and she is expected to meet with several female human trafficking victims. Corker, chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, discussed his End Modern Slavery Initiative with top Vatican officials when he visited in February, and he has spoken with Trump deputy national security advisor Dina Powell in advance of Trump’s visit. “I see a tremendous alignment there,” Corker says. “We have had great meetings with the Trump team on this, I know it is something that Ivanka herself is interested in.”
Violence against religious minorities, especially Christians, in the Middle East could be another. Trump often made ISIS beheading Christians a talking point on the campaign trail, and his evangelical supporters like Franklin Graham have advocated for the issue to be a priority to Trump’s Washington.
Russia’s role in defending the Assad regime in Syria could be a hurdle. Putin, Corker says, “has done a tremendous PR job with the Vatican” making himself the defender of Christians in the Middle East. “You sit there going, my gosh,” Corker says. “Even though Putin has helped stoke the mass refugee crisis that we have in Europe … the narrative there is they are very upset with the United States over its refugee policy.”
Even though the appointment of U.S. ambassador to the Holy See was vacant until Trump nominated Callista Gingrich last week, some diplomatic efforts have continued. The Holy See has been significantly involved in brokering political dialogue in Venezuela, and when Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon visited Rome in April, he thanked Vatican officials for those efforts and discussed the need for prompt elections and the release of political prisoners, according to a State department official.
This Wednesday, Pope Francis has said he plans to listen to Trump despite their differences. As he told reporters recently when asked about the trip, “I never make a judgment about a person without hearing him out.”

UNICEF tasks FG on 500,000 underfed children

AN estimated 500,000 Nigerian children aged five years and below are at risk of dying from malnutrition by the end of this year except funds are urgently released to tackle the debilitating condition, UNICEF has alerted.

These at-risk children are among the 2.5 million children suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition, SAM, a condition associated with insufficient nutrients needed for a child’s development. With government silent on specific allocation of funds to tackle malnutrition in the 2017 Federal budget, UNICEF officials and stakeholders at a recent national media dialogue in Yola, Adamawa State, affirmed that the only way Nigeria can end child malnutrition in the short term is to source the required sum of $144 million to treat at least two million underfed children in the country.
They argued that to avert more deaths from severe acute malnutrition, Federal government must as a matter of urgency invest more in intervention services, particularly the Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM).
Available statistical estimates show that no less than half a million Nigerian children aged five and below die yearly as a result of mal nutrition, hence, investing in nutrition will yield valuable returns. At the media dialogue with the theme: “Investing in Child Malnutrition For the Future, “UNICEF Nutrition Specialist, Mrs. Philomena Irene, observed that although there are pockets of malnutrition all over the country, the cases are more in the North, particularly in the North East apparently due to insurgency.
Irene said inaction at any level could cost every investment of $1a loss of $16. “If government does not spend the $1 needed to prevent malnutrition now, $16 would be spent on numerous diseases that malnutrition causes in the future.”Improving nutrition Irene said improving nutrition during the critical 1,000-day window from a woman’s pregnancy to her child’s 2nd birthday has potential to save lives; help millions of children develop fully, as well as deliver greater economic prosperity. She cited the low rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the country, stressing the need for policies that would promote breastfeeding culture in the country.
According to UNICEF, $107 million is needed for treatment of malnourished children in Nigeria, but just $21.5 million has been realised leaving a shortfall of$85.5 million. “Only $5 is needed to prevent malnutrition in a child while a total of $71 is needed to treat each malnourished child,” she noted.
Justifying the urgent need to tackle pervasive problem of malnutrition, particularly in the North East, Irene explained that half of the pre-existing health facilities have been damaged. The situation of the burden of malnutrition in states like Borno, according to statistics from the Global Acute Malnutrition, GAM, a total of 244,268 children suffer from Severe Acute Malnutrition, 241,584 have Moderate Acute Malnutrition, MAM, while 183,352 breast feeding women are malnourished.
Urgent intervention :Irene stressed that without urgent intervention, 19 per cent of these children may be lost. Currently, UNICEF statistics show that the total number of children affected by malnutrition in the South East in 2016 was 34, 889, while 6, 700 deaths were recorded.
In the South South, 86, 304 children were affected, out of which 16, 700 died, while the South West had 84, 417 cases and 16, 300 deaths; North West had 1,594, 462 cases and 308, 000 deaths; North Central 43,635 cases with 8,400 deaths; and North East 695,998 cases and 134, 000 deaths.
To avert more deaths from SAM, Irene maintained that all the 36 States of the Federation must play their part by contributing to the SAM intervention services, such as the Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition, CMAM. There is also need to expand the Centres to all political wards with a view to bringing it to the door steps of the rural poor.
To reach the targets to reduce stunting among children and anaemia in women, increase exclusive breastfeeding rates, and mitigate the impact of wasting, the UNICEF Nutrition Specialist called for full commitment from all States of the Federation to the campaign against child malnutrition in the country.”“Only four states, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi and Sokoto have contributed to the fund in 2016 towards the purchase of Ready-To-Use-Therapeutic Food (RUTF), the major intervention for severe acute malnutrition.
Kaduna’s contribution: Studies show that Kaduna contributed thelargest sum of N300 million with Sokoto, Gombe and Bauchi contributing N50 million, N17 million and N10 million respectively.
Jigawa State has approved N150 million for the purchase, but the money is yet to be released.
The initiative, under the Community Management of Acute Malnutrition, CMAM, is designed to bring succour to millions affected by the pervasive problem of malnutrition, particularly in the North East. Aisha Abdullahi, 40, was there with her 11-month-old baby, Mohammadu, who suffers from SAM. Aisha was ill all through her pregnancy and the baby was born premature. She was a regular visitor to the Centre to collect the Ready- To- Use Therapeutic Food,RUTF. “When I stopped exclusive breastfeeding, I started giving him pap and kunu but suddenly he began losing weight after a bout of diarrhoea.”Six-month-old Fatimah Umoru is also battling SAM. Fatimah’s mother Hafsat did not breastfeed her exclusively because she was not producing enough milk. Instead, she fed her with a combination of breast milk, kunu and soya milk. This ill advised mode of feeding led to her being malnurished. Ten-month-old Hauwa was also taken to the Centre following bouts of diarrhoea. Her mother, Hajara, who was there for the first time, said her baby was okay at birth but started losing weight at four months. I went to the General Hospital and she was given some drugs but she was referred here.
Predicament: These children’s predicament is typical of the situation of millions of Nigerian children today. Studies show that no social class in Nigeria is spared the burden of malnutrition as reports show that 18 percent of malnourished children are from homes of the rich.
All of them combined are among the 2.5 million children with SAM and possibly part of the 500,000 of those at risk of death by end of this year if nothing is done.
Reports of increasing rates of malnutrition have been making the rounds nationwide and experts are worried that if adequate investments are not made in time, the country may end up with a generation of malnourished children that have potential to grow into malnourished adults.
Worse still, malnutrition is associated with Non Communicable Diseases such as diabetes and obesity among others. A World Bank report shows that every year, malnutrition claims the lives of three million children aged below five with billions of dollars lost to productivity and health care costs.
A Nutrition Focal Person, Yola, North Local Government, Adamawa State, Nacha Bitrus attached to the Nassarawa, Health Centre, Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, said 15 -20 new cases are seen weekly. Bitrus however, lamented that some of the cases of malnutrition they treated relapsed due to the inability of the mothers to continue with the right food at home.
Lesson for mothers:“We teach them what to do, how to feed the children but to be able to remain in a good state of health, poverty must be addressed. Government should begin to think of how to alleviate poverty. When parents are empowered they will be able to take care of their children.
Bitrus said just one death had been recorded this year because the child that died had medical issues and acute malnutrition and the mother failed to bring her on time. She however, noted that despite the RUTF nicknamed “miracle food” many mothers still default or abscond. As a way out, there is a Young Child Infant Feeding Programme which comprises a group of women who go into the villages to fish out these babies. “When these babies are brought to the Centre with the help of this group, we screen them and treat those malnourished with RUTF for at least eight weeks after which they are discharged.”To tackle ignorance, the Centre also initiated health talk for mothers on the types of food to feed their children after they have been discharged to avoid relapse. In her presentation, at the workshop entitled“Addressing Child Malnutrition in Nigeria: Challenges, Efforts and the Way Forward”on behalf of Nutrition Specialist UNICEF, Abuja, Zach Fushieni, explained that many parents seem not to be aware of what to eat, how to prepare it and the quantity to be taken.

I’m bona fide Oba of Lagos, Akiolu tells court

Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos

yesterday told Justice A. Candide-Johnson of the Ikeja High Court that he is the bona fide paramount ruler of Lagos.Oba Akiolu, accompanied by 10 white cap chiefs, was in court over a case filed by Princes Adedoyin Adebiyi and Rasheed Modile, challenging his ascendancy to the throne. He said: “I am here to justify my appointment, you cannot build something on nothing, it will be broken. By native law and customsand by law, I am the bona fide Oba of Lagos.”Joined as respondents in the suit are the governor, attorney-general and Commissioner of justice, Prince Babatunde Akitoye and Chief Junaid Eko.Adebiyi and Modile are claiming that Akiolu is ineligible to be king because he is not a member of anyroyal family and a direct descendant of Oba Ado, the first Oba of Lagos.According to the claimants, only members of the Ologun Kutere andAkinsemoyin ruling houses are entitled to the throne. They alleged that proper customary rules and procedures were not followed when Oba Akioluwas appointed as Oba in May 2003.Led in evidence by his lawyer, Mr Adetokunbo Mumuni, Akiolu narrated the procedure he followedbefore being installed.“After I made my intention known to my family that I wanted to be Oba of Lagos, I applied for the throne. In May 2003, the head of the kingmakers and the then Sole Administrator of Lagos Island Council called at my residence. At that time I was preparing to go to the mosque and I was told that I received a letter from the state government and the State Executive Council.“The letter accepted my nomination that I have been approved to be a worthy successorof the late Oba of Lagos. It will be exactly 14 years tomorrow (May 23) that my appointment was approved. By the grace of Almighty Allah, there is nothing likerotation in the succession to the throne of Oba of Lagos,” Akiolu said. Before cross-examining Akiolu, theclaimants’ counsel, Mr Babatunde Fashanu (SAN), applied that Akiolushould be addressed as the defendant and not the Oba of Lagos for the purpose of the case.“I apply that all referrals to the defendant as the Oba of Lagos should be expunged from the records of this honourable court. Within the walls of this courtroom, he is a defendant and when we step out of the courtroom, I will lie down and greet him as ‘Kabiyesi’ because I am like a son to him,” he said. The court did not grant the request.Akiolu told the court that he had a relationship with Fashanu’s father when he was working as a lawyer during his early years of legal practice 32 years ago.“I know your father, I used to carry files for him when we were working together.”Responding to Fashanu’s question whether proper customary procedure was followed when he became King, Akiolu said he was installed according to the customs of Lagos as Oba by kingmakers.“Akiolu is a direct descendant of Oba Ologun Kutere, there is no registered declaration for the throne.“It is the old customs and the recommendations of the Price Commission which is over 100 years ago that is still valid till today.”Akiolu also debunked claims that the Akiolu royal family is not one of the ruling houses because it is non-existent.He said: “Despite the letter from the Lagos State Government confirming my appointment as Oba and stating that I am from the Akiolu royal family, I want to make it clear that a royal family and ruling house means the same thing. My appointment as the king is the first time in history that kingmakers will be unanimous in selecting an Oba of Lagos.”
Justice Candide-Johnson adjourned till June 19.

Real Madrid are La Liga champions

Real Madrid have won their 33rd La Liga title, and their first since the 2011-12 season, after recording a 2-0 win over Malaga in Sunday night’s decisive fixture at La Rosaleda.Los Blancos knew that a point would be enough to take the title away from Barcelona, but a defeat would open the door for the Catalan giants to retain the title at the final moment.Meanwhile, Barcelona spectacularly came from two goals behind to beat Eibar 4-2 on home soil, Real Madrid’s two-goal victory ultimately saw them finish three points clear at the top of La Liga.It took Real Madrid less than two minutes to make the breakthrough with Ronaldo racing onto an excellent through pass from Isco before rounding Carlos Kameni and finding the back of the net.Five minutes after the away side had opened the scoring, Barcelona, needing to win to stand any chance of landing the title, fell behind at home to Eibar courtesy of an effort from Takashi Inui.Malaga had a half-chance to level the scores in the 12th minute whenJony found space in the final third before striking towards goal, but his effort was always moving away from Keylor Navas’s post. Former Barcelona forward Sandro was next to try his luck, bringing a decent stop from Real Madrid’s Costa Rican goalkeeper.Benzema came close to scoring a second for the visitors in what wasan open first 20 minutes, but the Frenchman’s close-range effort was deflected wide of the post.Sandro thought that he had levelled in the 21st minute when his dipping free kick headed for thetop corner, but Navas flew across his goal to make a wonderful save, injuring himself in the process after colliding with the post.Neither team really had control of they contest as the first period approached its final 15 minutes, with Sandro threatening for Malaga, and Ronaldo causing problems in a central position down the other end of the field.Indeed, Ronaldo came close to sending Real Madrid 2-0 ahead 10 minutes before the break after meeting a cross trim Benzema, but the Portuguese could not find aroute past Kameni from close range, with the Cameroon international dropping low to deny the forward a second goal.Kameni was again called into action late in the first period to keep out a long-range strike from Kroos, but Malaga remained a serious threat down the other end, with Sandro hitting the crossbar in the 38th minute, before Keko headed just wide of the post moments later.

Why Lagos deserves the best, by Ambode

LAGOS deserves the best in infrastructure to match its status as a Mega-city, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said yesterday.Commissioning the Abule Egba and Ajah flyovers, Freedom and Admiralty roads, among other projects, he said in Lekki, they werepart of his administration’s efforts to find home grown solutions to problems. The driving motive behind the Ajah Bridge, he said, was to improve connectivity and facilitate economic growth, while the Abule-Egba flyover would open up other areas of the state and improve residents’ lives.Ajah, Ambode recalled, was under terrible gridlock daily, which crippled businesses and resulted inloss of man hours and revenues. He said the bridge would eliminate traffic jam while the Freedom and Admiralty roads would provide an alternative to the Lekki/Ikoyi Bridge, thereby easing traffic in Lekki Phase 1.“We had to give this project prioritybecause of its strategic importance to the economic growth of the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) and the Ibeju-Lekki-Epe axis. This axis would play a key role in the future prosperity of Lagos State as home to many multi-billion naira private investments in the LFTZ as well as the upcoming seaport and airport.“As a government, we are irrevocably committed to making Lagos State an investment haven and we have made it a duty to put in place top class infrastructure that would facilitate movement of people, goods and materials. We are confident that these initiatives will boost commercial activities in this axis, support economic growthand significantly reduce travel timeas well as other costs associated with traffic challenges,” Ambode said.Ambode said his administration built the Abule Egba Bridge following engagement with the people, adding that the area is strategic for commercial and social activities. He said the area’s importance moved his administration to redesign the traffic flow chart of the axis to ensure better connectivity between Lagos and Ogun states.“We all have cause to rejoice as theJubilee Bridge, Abule-Egba is delivered. This bridge is one of the interventions we embarked upon toensure free flow of traffic, stimulate commercial activities and create opportunities for our people.“Lagos means business and today,Abule-Egba is open for business. This bridge signposts the beginning of a new era of development that would enhance the standard of living of the people in this axis,” Ambode said. The bridge the governor said, was the beginning of a process to transform the axis to the new economic hub of the state, adding that the ongoing Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) lane from Oshodi to Abule Egba would be followed by another BRT lane from Abule Egba to the Ogun State boundary.Ambode said the adjoining roads disrupted during the bridge’s construction would be rehabilitated, while a shopping mallwould be constructed opposite the Oke-Odo Market.Earlier, Waterfront Infrastructure Development Commissioner Adebowale Akinsanya said the Ajah Bridge is a 160-metre long dual carriageway with total length of 620metres. The Abule Egba Bridge is 1.3km long with a water fountain. Freedom Road is 2.7km; Admiralty Way, 2.2km.

I Never said we don't know who will sign 2017 Budget -Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has reacted to media reports alleging he said that the Federal government does not know who will sign the 2017 budget. After the Federal Executive Council meeting today, some state house correspondents asked him questions regarding who would sign the 2017 budget.
According to Mohammed, the only response he gave was that when the budget is passed to the Executive from the National Assembly, the issuewill be addressed. Some media houses interpreted his statement to mean the Federal government has no one to sign the budget. Lai denied the speculation in a statement released this evening. Read the statement below...
Our attention has been drawn to a story in a section of the media quoting the Honourable Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, as saying ''we don't know who will sign the 2017 budget''. This quote is a malicious misrepresentation of what transpired at the post-Federal Executive Council Meeting press briefing on Wednesday, 17 May 2017. When the Minister was asked a question relating to the signing of the 2017 Budget, his response was: ''When it is transmitted to the Presidency, the issue will be addressed.'' Anything beyond that response amounts to deliberate mischief and should be ignored.

Fed Govt, NCDC raise plan against Ebola

AN Ebola Preparedness Working Group (EPWG) has been set up by the Federal Ministry of Health in conjunction with the Nigeria Centrefor Disease Control (NCDC) as a pro-active step in preventing Ebola outbreak.

The move followed the formal notification from the World Health Organisation (WHO) of an outbreakof Ebola Virus Disease in the DRC.The setting up of the working group came after a directive by theMinister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, to the citizenry not to panic given the level of risk of possible transmission of the virus from the Central African country.

The Director of Medical Services at the Ministry of Health Jackson Kioko said the government has reactivated the rapid response teams for enhanced surveillance and follow up of travelers with elevated body temperatures and asymptomatic cases with history of travel from DRC.
“We wish to assure Kenyans that there is no suspected case of Ebola virus in the country and they should remain vigilant.
“They should look out for any such illnesses and report to the nearest health facility without delay for immediate verification and investigation,” Kioko said in a statement issued in Nairobi.

200,000 jobs for artists -Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says over 200,000 jobs will be created with the N300 million credit facility provided by the Bank of Industry (BOI), for artists.
The minister made the disclosure at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), between BOI and the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) in Abuja on Friday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports the MoU was presented to the minister by Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, the Director-General of NCAC.
“I have been reliably informed that top on the list of the benefits that will accrue from this landmark MoU is creation of over 200,000 jobs for the sector.
“This is epochal and in line with one of the cardinal programmes of this administration, which is job creation and empowerment’’, he said.
The minister explained the MoU would act as a catalyst for the development of the country’s craft industries, create a financing window and assist NCAC members in capacity building.
Mohammed also said the MoU would encourage producers of cultural products and services to work toward attaining standard of modern practices in packaging of nation’s cultural products.
He said that the memorandum would also enable artists to compete favourably at the global markets and earn them a decent living.
Mohammed urged all states to take advantage of the loan for the development of the creative sector in their domains.
He said the details of how to access the fund would form a major part of discussions at the forthcoming meeting of Chief Executives of Culture in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, from May 9 to May 12.
The minister congratulated Runsewe for achieving the feat and putting the event together, few days after he assumed office.
He also appreciated the Acting Managing Director of BoI, Mr Waheed Olagunju, for his support and partnership.
The minister described the MoU as `a right step in a right direction and one of the biggest achievements the sector had recorded in recent time.’
He said the Ministry had signed MoU with local and international partners, including the Tony Elumelu Foundation and the British Council, to develop the capacity of creative artists.
Earlier, Runsewe said it was the first time in the history of the country that the industry was given a single digit approach to loans.
He disclosed that two other similar MoUs were in the offing for the development of the sector
Runsewe commended the minister for changing the nation’s narrative under his leadership and for his passion for the development of the culture and creative sector.
